Troubleshooting Common Faults in Self-Cleaning Screens

MAMBA 2026-08-19 15:27:14

Self-cleaning screens are built to run reliably, but just like any vibrating machine, problems pop up that can slow things down or stop work altogether. Fixing these issues isn't usually about replacing the whole screen—it's about finding what's getting in the way of its self-cleaning action. Treat troubleshooting like detective work: start with the basics and work your way toward the problem. Spotting the link between what you see and what’s actually wrong gets you back up and running faster.

Symptom: Reduced Throughput or Persistent Blinding

When your self-cleaning screen starts clogging or throughput drops—basically, when it behaves more like a regular screen—the first thing to do is look at how it vibrates. Grab a vibration analyzer, or just watch it closely: does the whole deck move smoothly, or is it shaking funny or uneven? If the motion isn’t right, you’re probably dealing with worn-out bearings, damaged motor keys, or counterweights that slipped. Also, double-check the frequency and amplitude settings; someone might’ve bumped them by accident.

Symptom: Excessive Noise or Bearing Overheating

Loud noises or hot bearings should get your immediate attention. Most of the time, it’s a lubrication problem. Check grease levels and look at the grease itself. Water or fine particles can ruin lubrication fast. If the grease is fine but the problem sticks around, the bearings might be worn out from bad alignment or carrying too much weight—maybe the deck’s blind and heavy. Stick with the right grease and follow the schedule the manufacturer recommends; most breakdowns here are just from skipped maintenance.

Symptom: Loose or Broken Fasteners, Panel Damage

Finding loose bolts, cracked panels, or broken side plates points to either a rough install or too much stress on the machine. Double-check if you used the right torque and followed the bolt sequence. Make sure everything sits clean and flat. But don’t forget—feed problems can do this too. If material piles up on one side or giant chunks hit the deck, panels can break. Check how the feed comes in and the scalping section above.

Symptom: Failure of Auxiliary Cleaning Systems

If water sprays or air cannons stop working, shift your focus to those systems. For water—check for clogged nozzles, weak pressure, or a busted solenoid valve. With air cannons, make sure there’s enough air and that solenoids get power. A bad timer or PLC can quietly turn off the whole system, and then blinding slowly takes over.

Self-Cleaning Screen

Always start with the simple stuff: look for obvious damage, check power, and review control settings. Keep a log of faults and how you fixed them. Over time, that history makes finding repeat problems quicker. If you get stuck, grab the machine manual—don’t just make guesses. Staying systematic keeps downtime short and your screen working like it should.
