Wear-Resistant Formulation for Rubber Screens Used in Copper Ore Crushing

Copper ore is not a gentle material to screen. It reaches the deck dense, sharp-edged straight out of the cone or HPGR, and often carrying enough moisture and clay to turn a fine aperture into a clogged mess by mid-shift. Choosing rubber screen panels for that duty is therefore less about grabbing the hardest compound on a data sheet and more about balancing three pressures that pull against each other: impact at the feed point, abrasion across the deck, and the tendency of sticky fines to blind it. Get the balance right and a set of panels runs through to the planned shutdown; get it wrong and the same deck is open every few weeks.

Impact at the Feed Point Is What Fails First

Most premature failures start in the first half metre of the deck, where rock arriving at two or three metres a second drives straight into the panel instead of sliding across it. Rubber screen panels built on a high-rebound natural rubber compound in the 55 to 65 Shore A range absorb that punishment and throw the material back into the bed, while harder compounds in the low seventies resist sliding abrasion better but tend to chip and cut where the feed lands. A common and usually worthwhile compromise is to specify a softer feed-zone panel and a harder compound over the discharge half, rather than one compromise grade across the whole deck.

Compound Chemistry Behind Wear Resistance

Copper ore fines are angular and unforgiving, so the base polymer blend matters as much as the hardness figure. Natural rubber gives outstanding cut and tear resistance, while a proportion of polybutadiene improves abrasion loss, and a well-dispersed carbon black reinforcement ties the two together. Heat is the quiet enemy here — a deck running continuously builds temperature inside the compound, and an efficient or semi-efficient vulcanization system holds its properties far better than a conventional sulphur cure. It is also sensible to ask how the anti-degradant package handles acidic mine water and residual flotation reagent, since both travel with the ore.

Panel Format, Aperture and Thickness

Where the ore is damp, slotted apertures generally outperform square ones because they flex as the deck cycles and shed near-size particles, and rubber screen panels with a relief profile underneath reduce the contact area that lets fines grip. Going thicker buys wear life but eats open area, so it only pays where the deck has capacity to spare.
